Jana Papenbroock is an Iranian-German filmmaker, videographer and writer who grew up in New York, studied art and film with a focus on ethnographic, documentary and experimental modes of practice in Paris, Hamburg and Cologne, where she completed her Diploma at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. She is currently based in Berlin.

Her video and film works revolve around themes of representation, subjectivisation, variant understandings of the social and participatory and cooperative forms of collaboration. They have been shown in galleries and exhibition spaces around the world, like the Artist Television Space (San Francisco), Nikolaj Kunsthal (Copenhagen), NRW-Forum (Düsseldorf), Echo Park Film Center (Los Angeles), the European Parliament in Brussels and have been screened and awarded in international film festivals.

She has worked as a publisher, editor and writer for artist publications and especially enjoys collaborating with other artists like Julia Holter, Scott Cazan, The Shlumpers (a Hamburg based atelier community of artists with disabilities), Azdar Theatre Group from Kabul and many more on unlikely and Sisyphean projects.
